Using Cabling and Bracing to Save a Maple Tree
I first visited the property owners to assess their majestic maple tree, which had overgrown to loom over the house and garage, causing worry about potential damage. The main issues were co-dominant leaders—two main trunks that split from a common point—and a large lower branch leaning toward the house. The owners feared they might have to say goodbye to their cherished tree.
After a thorough assessment, it was clear that removing the tree wasn’t necessary. With some careful interventions, we could address the potential risks and keep the tree safely in place, allowing it to remain a part of their landscape for years ahead, and help prevent potential damage.
We started by installing cables to support the co-dominant leaders. These cables were placed at two points on the trunks to help stabilize them and prevent them from splitting during severe weather. Think of it as a safety harness for the tree. This support system is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the tree.
Next, we turned our attention to the large branch leaning toward the house. To safeguard both the tree and the property, we braced the branch from two points on the larger leader. Bracing essentially acts like a supportive arm, holding the branch in place. Cabling and bracing can even allow a branch to remain suspended if it does detach from the trunk.
Cabling and bracing are important techniques in tree care. Cabling involves tying the tree’s trunks together to prevent them from separating, while bracing supports individual branches. These measures help the tree withstand strong storms and maintain its structure.
In addition to these safety measures, we carried out some careful pruning and reduction cuts. This step was essential in reducing the overall weight and stress on the tree, further decreasing the risk of any potential failure.
The owners were relieved to know that their maple tree could be safely preserved.
